And The Finalists Are…..

July 15th, 2010

We are so excited – the entries are in, and the top 10 finalists have been selected! Now it is time to vote for your favorites. Will it be “Jane Fonda” with her amazing leg kicks? Or maybe it’s “That Guy” who has “that body… fine and dandy”. The guys from ‘Your Majesty’ really want to be famous – should we help them out? “My Entourage” needs a cook, a personal assistant, and a shirt. “Not a Sorryanaire” seriously needs some French lessons – “Underwear Slap Grandmother”?

Someone is a talented artist – check out “The Braganaire Quest”. And someone just needs some help around the house so she can eat some cream puffs (we <3 cream puffs!) – “Cheers Bragadoo”.  ”My Interview” needs some friends… seriously! He interviewed himself! Someone needs a break, from “Working 6-10″ – should we give her a helping hand? And then there is “A Full Calendar” – who needs a dog trainer and a pool cleaner (just for a start!) Did you see that pool?

Our talented graphic designer, Jerry Kopec, has created a toolkit for our finalists to make it easy to promote their video and get votes. He’s so creative – take a look below!

Make sure you get your votes in! And leave a comment below (if you dare) telling us who you voted for and why!

Tips on Getting And Using Great Testimonials.

July 5th, 2010

Testimonials or ‘brags’ are a wonderful way to market yourself. They give you credibility—a third-party endorsement. It is no longer you alone saying that you and your company and products or services are phenomenal—it is someone else saying that they are phenomenal! When you place an ad, everyone knows that you have paid for it. It is you bragging about yourself. Much more believable and credible is someone else bragging about you!

The first step is to get ‘bragged’ about!

Most of us find it really hard to brag about ourselves. Its not in our makeup to want to boast about us, or our businesses. (Of course there are a few exceptions) :D It is much easier if there are other people we can call on to brag about us.

If you do great work, and your customers are happy, then ask them to ‘brag’ about you! Try using this script:

“Hi Susan. I hope you have been happy with the service I have provided. If so, would you mind providing a testimonial for me? I’m using an online service, called Bragadoo – I’ll email you the link. Thank you – and  I hope we get the opportunity to work together again!”

Next, its time to spread all this brag love! How? Use the brags in your marketing materials, use them on your web site, use them in advertisements, use them in your media kits, put them on business cards and make sure to use them in your sales presentations and/or on the telephone as success stories.

Here are a few more tips:

1. Always use real testimonials. People can tell when a brag is fake – nothing sounds as good as a testimonial that is sincere, and full of genuine words of praise from a real customer or client. You may be asked by your customer to write the brag for them – our recommendation is that your politely ask them to write their own opinions on your service in their own words. Self – authored brags usually sound phony.

2. Long vs. Short. Long testimonials are usually better then short ones. You may see testimonials that are really short, for e.g.:

“…fabulous!…”

“…excellent…wonderful…”

Do these testimonials mean much to you?  Longer brags – two or three sentences versus a single word or phrase – come across as more believable. For example:

“I can’t say enough good things about the quality of service I received from ABC company. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone – they provide the best service in the local area.”

Sure, its longer, but it somehow seems more sincere than a one-word superlative.

3. Use full attribution. If you decide to use the testimonial in any of your marketing materials or on your website, attribute each brag. It will increase the believability of your brags. If possible, include the persons name, city and state, and (if a business customer) their job title and company (e.g., “Ada Dittli, President, Cedar Ridge, Inc.”).

People are more likely to believe this sort of full disclosure than testimonials which seem to conceal the identity of the speaker – like “D.W. in Nevada”.

4. Get permission. Make sure you get permission from your customer to reprint his words before including his testimonial in your copy. Even though it they have written a brag about you on Bragadoo, it is always polite to ask their permission to reprint the brag in other materials.

With the wise use of testimonials you can increase your credibility. And with your increased credibility you can very well increase your sales rate. Good luck!

How To: Make a Winning Video

June 28th, 2010

You want to enter our contest, but creating a video is a little overwhelming? Follow some of these ‘how-to’ tips to helping you create a great video!

1. RTFM

Who has started putting together a piece of build it yourself furniture to find you’ve used all the wrong parts in all the wrong places? Then you have to go back to the beginning and undo all your work. Did you skip reading the manual?

Tip: Make sure you read the rules of engagement (aka RTFM)! Don’t spend any time doing anything until you know what it is you’re supposed to do.

2. Judges Rules

What is it that the judges will be looking for? If the guidelines ask for an emotional video, make sure you make an emotional video. Does your video illustrate love and romance? Is it universally appealing to the audience reviewing it? And is it relevant to the theme of the contest?

Tip: Don’t disqualify yourself by not reviewing and understanding the criteria

3. Pick Me!

Know your audience – who is it that will be picking the winner? A large online audience? Or just a small team of hand selected experts? Once you know this, you can create a video that is appealing to that audience.

Tip: Think of this as if you were trying to someone something – you would want to know what they find appealing so you could target them with the right message or offer, right?

4. Get Creative

What is it that people like about you? Are you funny? Do you have a weird or unusual talent? Do you look good on camera? Or maybe you have a story to tell? Start brainstorming with your ‘team’. Your team could be just you and your spouse, or it could be a group of your neighbors. Put your heads together, and come up with a plan of action and maybe a script. Don’t forget your hook – the thing that ‘grips’ people and keeps them watching for more.

Tip: What do YOU find appealing in a story? Think of the videos or stories that you’ve seen – what did you like about them? If they appealed to you, chances are they will appeal to others. So find the elements you liked and use them in your video plan.

5. Lights, Camera, Action!

Lets sort this out right now – you DON’T need to be a videographer to make a video for a contest. You also don’t need fancy camera equipment. All you need is your PC’s built in camera, a simple digital video camera, like a Flip, or even the video cameras often built in to cameras or smart phones. Use a light colored wall as a backdrop, and make sure you have extra lighting pointing toward you (but behind the camera). Use a tripod if you have one, or borrow a friend with a steady arm.  Finally, make sure you have plenty of batteries charged and ready to go!

Tip: You can find Flip’s on sites like Ebay for less than $100.

6. Edit Away

Depending on the camera you use, you may have a few options for editing your video. The Flip camera has its own editing software, as do some of the other digital cameras, and even some smart phones. Use the cables provided with the camera to connect the camera to your computer. In most cases, the software you will be able to use to edit the video will popup once the camera is connected.

There are also other options, like iMovie (on Macs) and Windows Movie Maker (on PCs) that have more robust features. If you have good computer skills, you should be able to use these tools. YouTube has also just released a new feature that allows you to conduct some basic editing of your videos from within YouTube. Check out these tutorials showing you how!

Tip: Don’t stress out. Some of the funniest and most viral videos have been raw, simple user generated videos.

7. Good Luck

If you are still stuck, don’t forget that there are numerous websites to give you some ideas. Check out commercials on YouTube, for example. If you are finding it hard to edit your video, try Googling “how to make a video”. You’ll find a world of help online.

Good Luck!

Press Release: Bragadoo Braganaire Contest Will Award $20,000 in Home and Family Services to Winner

June 8th, 2010

Hire Providers for Home and Family Services with Bragadoo

Bragadoo Braganaire Contest Will Award $20,000 in Home and Family Services to Winner

SEATTLE, WA – June 8, 2010 – Today Bragadoo introduces its online community to share and find providers for home and family services. Available at http://www.bragadoo.com, the site is designed to maximize consumers’ ability to share service provider referrals, i.e. brags, with friends and neighbors and invite others to do the same. Bragadoo currently offers more than 60,000 provider listings, ranging from mechanics, cleaning and fitness providers to landscaping services, child care providers and beauty consultants such as make-up artists.

Independent research conducted by the site shows that more than 50% of people polled conducted business with companies they would brag about or recommend to friends, specifically for home and family services, such as household repairs and maintenance, pet and childcare.  Additionally, 70% of people are more likely to hire a service provider that a friend has bragged about.

Bragadoo makes it easy for consumers to boast about favorite businesses and share their comments, approval and experiences with others in the Bragadoo community.  They can invite friends, family and professionals to do the same to spur network growth.  In addition, they can easily search for, find and hire a wide variety of home and family service professionals such as mechanics and cleaning services and request bids.  Consumers access the site free of charge.

Bragadoo Braganaire Contest Kicks-Off

To support the site’s launch, Bragadoo kicks-off a contest today to name America’s first Braganaire, offering the winner the opportunity to select and hire an entourage of bragworthy professionals to perform home, family and personal services for one year. The winner of the Braganaire contest will receive $20,000 in services from Bragadoo.

Word of Mouth Referrals for Small Business Owners

Service providers and small business owners can find work and make contacts through the site, as well as build their own social networks by inviting friends, customers and fans to contribute to Bragadoo.  Consumers who post brags about a contractor, household, pet or personal service become brand ambassadors for trusted providers and benefit the entire community. Basic listings are free, and service providers are given the opportunity to upgrade to premium packages with additional features.

“Bragadoo is essentially a mash-up of service listings and social networking,” said Nathan Casey, founder of Bragadoo. “Larger businesses are capitalizing on the exponential growth and value of social networks and online marketing. We want to enable small businesses and independent service providers, who rely on word of mouth referrals, to be able to do the same. Bragadoo captures the value of an online referral within a social network by giving friends a viagra to brag about quality service providers they’ve used, and offering small businesses the opportunity to connect with their customers online.”

Bragadoo Backed by Hawkeye Investments and Rally Capital

Bragadoo replaces Jobvana.com, a site offering local listings and reviews of service providers, which was founded by entrepreneur Nathan Casey in 2008. Bragadoo has received funding from John Chapple at Hawkeye Investments LLC, Dennis Weibling at Rally Capital LLC, and other Seattle-based angel investors.

“We’re excited about the transformation of Jobvana to Bragadoo,” said John Chapple, President of Hawkeye Investments. “We believe Bragadoo can strengthen quality service providers by creatively addressing the core issues of trust and personal recommendations that are central to the success of small businesses.”

About Bragadoo

Founded in 2008 as Jobvana.com, Bragadoo is a social network that allows consumers to introduce and share information about trusted and reliable service providers with their friends, family and community at large. How To Manage Your (Online) Reputation!

May 31st, 2010

Everyone has heard horror stories of contractors gone bad – or at least heard of shows like Holmes on Homes, where Mike Holmes helps homeowners who have been taken by a contractor. Many of these homeowners are embracing the power of the Internet and uploading videos, blogs, Tweets and Facebook status updates, to share their horror stories with the world.

For contractors, they can no longer run and hide when they’ve done shoddy work. Once its gets around town (at Internet speed) that they’re a danger to work with, they will quickly lose business, and potentially they’re entire business. How can contractors manage their online reputation?

Well, lets start with the obvious – don’t do shoddy work!

Then, if you want to know what people say about you, start up an online monitoring system. There are a number of ways to do this, and many tools are free.

1) Twittergo to www.monitter.com, and type in your business name. Does anything popup? If it does, get to it and start a conversation with the person who is mentioning you. What a great opportunity to engage in conversation with your customers. And if they’re not happy with your service, here is your opportunity to discuss it with them!

2) Facebook did you know that status updates from Facebook are now showing up in Google Search (and Bing, Yahoo! Etc.) ? Type in your business name in to Google Search, and then scroll all the way to the bottom of the page where the ‘results from your social connections’ are shown. What’s being said there? Is it all good?

3) Google SearchGoogle is your number one FRIEND and sometimes FOE online. Use it to your advantage. Type in your business name in the search field, and check out the results. Did you know you can narrow down the search criteria in Google Search? Just click on the left navigation links (images, blogs, recency, etc.) Make sure you check on the ‘images’ and ‘videos’ as well as blogs.

4) YouTubeare you aware of a particular client who may be upset with you? See if they’re on YouTube, and see if you are featured — good, bad or ugly — in any of their posts. While you are at it, search on YouTube for your business and personal name.

These are just a few of the tools available to you, but these are, in my opinion, the best tools. You can setup a page on Monitter, so you can just go back in to the website every now and again to see if there is anything being said about you.

Finally, perhaps THE most important tool in your arsenal should be Google Alerts. Go to www.google.com/alerts and type in any keywords you want to monitor. You will then receive frequent alerts (timing determined by you) via email with links to anything being said online about the keywords you’ve selected. Good stuff, huh? So get to it – start monitoring your online reputation today!

Welcome to Bragadoo World – Q&A with Founder, Nathan Casey

May 18th, 2010

Welcome to the world of Bragadoo! We want you to get to know us and what we do, but more importantly, we want to hear from you! So please leave comments, ask us questions, and interact with us on Facebook and Twitter. Now, here is some info on our Founder, the elusive Nathan Casey.

Sir Nathan - reflecting

Questions with Nathan

Q: What is your name and where do you live?

My name is Nathan Casey and I live in Seattle, WA – in the old fishing community of Ballard.

Q: Where do you like to travel to?

This time of year, I typically am excited to travel anywhere sunny. After a long Northwest winter, hot, sunny days are very enticing. But I also like adventure vacations – I love traveling to new countries and experiencing new cultures – it’s so refreshing to live a day you’ve never lived before.

Q: Are you in to recycling?

I recycle but it seems to be increasingly confusing about what I’m supposed to recycle and where it goes – I usually stick with the things I understand – glass, aluminum and paper.

Q: What do you do within your community?

Recently I’ve been focused on appeasing my neighbors by bringing in the trash cans in a timely manner and keeping my yard manicured. We’re actively involved with our church and we support the Humane Society and several local horse rescues. I also adamantly support the Seattle Seahawks.

Q: What was your first job?

My first job was working at the sales counter of a small coin and stamp store selling baseball cards and coins. I was 11 at the time – my older brother had just started a job at Taco Bell, so as a little brother, I obviously wanted a job as well.

Q: What is the craziest job you’ve had?

The job at the coin and stamp shop actually led me to the craziest job I’ve had – one of our regular customers was a pit boss for a mock casino – one you could hire to do charity or corporate parties – so, at 12, I put on a bow tie and dealt blackjack.

Q: What is the craziest thing you’ve done?

It all depends on how you define crazy. One spring break in college none of my friends were free to go on a trip so I flew down to Mexico by myself, took a bus to a small Indian town, hired a guide that spoke a little English and climbed an 18,000 ft volcano. That was probably the most spontaneous thing I did. The most “overly confident” thing I’ve probably done was travel to Kosovo by myself – it was several years after the war, but I naively chose to enter by bus, from a Serbian town that NATO had bombed during the war – they weren’t overly excited to see a US passport.

Q: What kind of jobs have you held?

I started out in tax and then moved on to various corporate finance and strategy jobs. Within Strategy I have worked quite a bit in corporate strategic planning, product development and market research.

Q: Boxers or briefs?

Both. But not at the same time.

Q: Favorite color?

Grey. I choose that purely based on the empirical evidence that most of my clothes are grey.

Q: Car?

I drive a truck. My wife actually picked it out. We needed something that could haul horses but was comfortable enough to be an everyday car, so we got a Lincoln truck.

Q: Dream car?

Unfortunately, I think I’m too practical to have a dream car. Since I’m driving a truck right now, anything with good gas mileage sounds appealing. When I was in high school, I had a 1977 Camaro – I think I’d like to have an old muscle car again at some point.

Q: Dream job?

Living it. It doesn’t get much better than working with the Bragadoo team.

Q: How do you relax?

Being with my wife – that keeps me calm. And getting out of the city – riding horses, sitting by the river – anything simple.

Q: What is your favorite movie?

Probably the Royal Tennenbaums. Or The Big Lebowski – I really like Jeff Bridges.

Q: Where did the idea for Bragadoo come from?

The idea came from looking at the unmet needs of small businesses and independent service providers. Because they rely almost entirely on personal referrals and word-of-mouth marketing, there hadn’t been good ways for them to leverage the power and efficiency of the internet. With the development and spread of social marketing, we felt this was a perfect tool for bringing the personal recommendations and referrals online.

Nathan staring down a roosterQ: Why did you decide to try to compete against Angie’s List and the likes, and didn’t you find it intimidating going against the big guys?

We tend to focus more on the needs of our customers then the competitors – we saw needs that weren’t being met and felt we could step in. As long as we’re meeting needs, we’re creating value for our customers.

Q: Favorite 80’s dance move?

The Robot – it’s always appropriate and universally appealing.

Q: What is your vision for Bragadoo?

To be the place people go to hire home and family services. To strengthen quality, independent service providers. To spur the reemergence of self-sustaining local communities. And to decrease the reliance on traditional marketing and increase the importance of doing good work.

Q: What was your life like before Bragadoo?

A little more stable, and a lot less exciting.

Q: Dogs or cats?

Both. My wife is always eager to adopt any animal. I like the loyalty of dogs and the independence of cats. Right now we’re between cats. But we have two dogs – a Lab and a Dalmatian.

Q: Cake or pie?

2 parts cake, 1 part pie. It seems counter intuitive, but the older I get, the more I like dessert.

Thank you Nathan! We have enjoyed getting to know you a bit better.

Stay tuned for more from the Bragadoo crew!
